The Missouri Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the death of a man who was shot by a Bourbon police officer Wednesday morning following a high-speed pursuit.
The man who was shot, Gary E. Wenzel, 50, was out of prison on parole from 2001 drug and property damage convictions in which he received a 30-year sentence, according to records with the Missouri Department of Corrections.
Wenzel was well-known to law enforcement agencies in this area and repeatedly ran from police, Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke said.
Wednesday’s pursuit began about 10:30 a.m. when the Bourbon officer attempted to stop a black, Chevrolet Cavalier that matched a car involved in a high-speed chase Feb. 21 in and around Sullivan, the patrol reported.
The chase ended when Wenzel crashed the car at the intersection of Route J and Fann Road in Crawford County. At that point, the officer fired his gun, fatally wounding Wenzel. The officer, who was not identified, was not hurt.
Complete details of the shooting were not released. The patrol said the investigation is ongoing and an autopsy and coroner’s inquest are scheduled.
